The Strip is arguably the most famous part of the Las Vegas area, but most of it is actually not located within the Las Vegas city limits but in nearby Paradise och Winchester. The Strip is a part of the Las Vegas Boulevard South.
The southernmost part of The Strip, located pretty close to the Interstate 25, is home to establishments such as Tropicana, Luxor, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, Mandarin Oriental, and Aria. Tropicana, which is found at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue, is linked to an elevated pedestrian bridge system that makes it possible to reach MGM Grand Las Vegas and Excalibur without having to combat the car traffic.
If you proceed northwards on Las Vegas Boulevard South, you will reach places such as Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Bally’s and Paris. They are all located between Harmon Avenue and Flamingo Road. On the other side of Flamingo Road, Las Vegas Blvd South is home to The Flamingo, Ceasars Palace, The Palazzo, The Venetian, The Mirage, Harrah’s and Casino Royal. The famous Rio All-Suit Hotel and Casino is also found in this area, but it is actually not located on Las Vegas Blvd South but on Flamingo Road.
As you reach the northernmost part of The Strip you will encounter establishments such as Riviera, Wynn and Encore. Traditionally, The Strip was said to have its northern end where Las Vegas Blvd South reached Sahara Avenue, but nowadays the Stratosphere – located on the other side of Sahara Avenue – is considered a part of The Strip. Unlike most other casinos on The Strip, Stratosphere is actually within the Las Vegas city limits.
Downtown Las Vegas
Before the advent of The Strip, Downtown Las Vegas was were the action was. This is the old city center and the first casino (Hotel Nevada) opened here as early as 1906. After gambling was banned, Hotel Nevada fell on hard times, but could be reestablished again in the 1930’s when gambling was legalized. What was once known as Hotel Nevada is today the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino. If you are interested in the early history of Las Vegas, you might also wish to visit Plaza Hotel & Casino, located on Main Street in what was once the Las Vegas railway station. Sadly, the old Northern Club (founded in 1931) is no longer in business. On the spot where it used to be is now the La Bayou Casino.
Binion’s Gambling Hall – or Horseshoe Casino as it used to be named – has had a huge impact on the development of Las Vegas as a poker destination. For many years, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) was held here, before it moved to Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino near The Strip.
