The Strip

The Strip is arguably the most famous part of the Las Vegas area, but most of it is actually not located within the Las Vegas city limits but in nearby Paradise och Winchester. The Strip is a part of the Las Vegas Boulevard South.

The southernmost part of The Strip, located pretty close to the Interstate 25, is home to establishments such as Tropicana, Luxor, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, Mandarin Oriental, and Aria. Tropicana, which is found at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue, is linked to an elevated pedestrian bridge system that makes it possible to reach MGM Grand Las Vegas and Excalibur without having to combat the car traffic.

If you proceed northwards on Las Vegas Boulevard South, you will reach places such as Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Bally’s and Paris. They are all located between Harmon Avenue and Flamingo Road. On the other side of Flamingo Road, Las Vegas Blvd South is home to The Flamingo, Ceasars Palace, The Palazzo, The Venetian, The Mirage, Harrah’s and Casino Royal. The famous Rio All-Suit Hotel and Casino is also found in this area, but it is actually not located on Las Vegas Blvd South but on Flamingo Road.

As you reach the northernmost part of The Strip you will encounter establishments such as Riviera, Wynn and Encore. Traditionally, The Strip was said to have its northern end where Las Vegas Blvd South reached Sahara Avenue, but nowadays the Stratosphere – located on the other side of Sahara Avenue – is considered a part of The Strip. Unlike most other casinos on The Strip, Stratosphere is actually within the Las Vegas city limits.

Downtown Las Vegas

las vegas 2Before the advent of The Strip, Downtown Las Vegas was were the action was. This is the old city center and the first casino (Hotel Nevada) opened here as early as 1906. After gambling was banned, Hotel Nevada fell on hard times, but could be reestablished again in the 1930’s when gambling was legalized. What was once known as Hotel Nevada is today the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino. If you are interested in the early history of Las Vegas, you might also wish to visit Plaza Hotel & Casino, located on Main Street in what was once the Las Vegas railway station. Sadly, the old Northern Club (founded in 1931) is no longer in business. On the spot where it used to be is now the La Bayou Casino.

Binion’s Gambling Hall – or Horseshoe Casino as it used to be named – has had a huge impact on the development of Las Vegas as a poker destination. For many years, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) was held here, before it moved to Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino near The Strip.

Examples of other hotels and casinos located in Downtown Las Vegas are California Hotel and Casino, Fremont Hotel and Casino, The D, Four Queen, El Cortez, Gold Spike Hotel and Casino, Plaza Hotel & Casino, and the Golden Nugget. The Golden Nugget is the largest one based in the number of hotel beds, since it has over 2 300 hotel rooms.

Boulder Strip

Boulder Strip is not very popular among tourists, but attracts a lot of locals – partly because there are plenty of casinos on Boulder Strip that offers slot machine with a higher than normal RTP. Generally speaking, Boulder Strip is low-key with a focus on slot machines, sportsbook and racing. If you want a wide assortment of table games and an chance to wear your best tuxedo, there are other parts of Las Vegas that are more fitting.

According to the official definition of Boulder Strip (as determined by the Nevada Gaming Commission) this area includes not just the Boulder Highway but all the casinos in the city of Henderson. In total, there is approximately 30 casinos in this area. There are also several hotels here, but the total amount of hotel rooms are lower than 3,000.

Some of the largest Boulder Strip casinos are Green Vallye Ranch Resort & Spa, Sunset Station, Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall, Boulder Station, Fiesta Henderson and Eastside Cannery Hotel and Casino.

North Las Vegas

North Las Vegas had traditionally not been known for casinos but for factories, storage and other industrial activities, even though there have been few casinos available out here as well. However, the area has started to change quite a bit in recent years. High tech companies have been setting up here, as well as hotels and casinos.

Examples of hotels and casinos in North Las Vegas are Cannery Casino and Hotel, Aliante Casino and Hotel, Opera House Casino, Fiesta Ranco, Santa Fe Station, Texas Station, Jerry’s Nugget, Silver Nugget, Poker Palace and Speedway Casino.
